HISTORY OF THE FIRMPeter J. "Chip" Hurley, Moyeen Haque, Ph.D., and Jaynool "Jay" Khayrattee were employed together at a major structural engineering firm in the 1980's and early 1990's. They perceived a niche in the marketplace for a new and dynamic engineering firm. They envisioned a firm capable of providing the service and personal attention of a small firm, with the technical expertise of a large firm. By judiciously recruiting a knowledgeable and creative staff, they felt this type of firm could evolve. Through this vision, the paradigm for Matrix Structural Engineers was created.
Matrix Structural Engineers was incorporated July of 1993 with Mr. Hurley as the founding partner and Mrs. Hurley as the Office Manager. Mr. Hurley's background for this endeavor included graduating cum laude in Architecture from The University of Texas at Austin in 1977, being employed as an architect for one year, returning to The University of Texas to earn an additional Bachelor's degree in Engineering, receiving a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Houston in 1990, and fifteen years of work experience in structural engineering.
In 1994, Dr. Haque joined as a principal in the firm. Dr. Haque had three significant papers published during his tenure as a lecturer at a prestigious engineering school and was also distinguished as a top doctoral candidate at The University of Texas. Today, Dr. Haque is highly regarded by his peers as one of the best technical structural engineers in the field. 1996 proved to be a watershed year for Matrix Structural Engineers. In January, they moved into a new 2,500 square foot lease space. The partners determined the move was necessary to accommodate future growth. In October, The Houston 100 named Matrix Structural Engineers as the 17th fastest growing privately owned company in the Houston area. With a two-year increase in revenues of 407%, Matrix Structural Engineers was in a comfortable position to move forward. They were a repeat winner in the Houston 100 in 1997 and 2000.
Rhonda Hurley became a principal with the firm in 1998 to streamline Human Resource programs. Then in 1999, Mrs. Hurley spearheaded the development of a marketing department. Matrix Structural Engineers had concentrated on obtaining work from repeat clients, and Mrs. Hurley developed marketing materials to aid in attracting new clients, as well as maintain the existing clients.
In 1999, Jay Khayrattee was recruited as a principal in the firm. Mr. Khayrattee's background included graduating first in his class while completing his undergraduate studies, earning a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from Texas Tech University, and fourteen years of experience at several of the leading engineering firms in Houston. Mr. Khayrattee's prolific experience in engineering enhanced the capabilities of Matrix Structural Engineers and impacted its continued growth. That same year Binh Ngo, with 19 years CAD experience, came on board as one of the lead drafters.
2002 proved to be another stellar year for Matrix Structural Engineers by their winning their first two structural awards. This was Matrix's first time to submit a project for an award and the project, First Presbyterian Church-Lancaster Center, was recognized by ACEC (American Council of Engineering Companies) and the NCSEA (National Council of Structural Engineering Associations). In 2003, Jay Khayrattee was inducted into the Civil Engineering Academy, a prestigious designation recognizing engineers who have a distinguished record of professional and public service.
Then in 2004 Matrix Structural Engineers received an Honorable Mention from Structural Engineers magazine as one of the the "Best Structural Engineering Firms to Work For". Finally, in 2005 Matrix Structural Engineers received four more structural awards, this time for St. Martin's Episcopal Church. This project received the Gold Medal from Texas Council of Engineering Companies, a Merit Award from the American Institute of Steel Construction, the National Recognition Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies, and the Outstanding Project Award from the National Council of Structural Engineers Association.
The resulting management group has many diverse and complementary talents. Matrix Structural Engineers has quickly grown in size and reputation as a significant, commercial structural engineering firm in Houston and what was once just a vision is now becoming a reality. |
